Strokkur – Earth’s Sneeze | Espirro quente da Terra

The Strokkur eruption consists of a “water bubble” phase and then the burst of a hot water column we may call “the Earth’s Hot Sneeze”.

This geyser is located in Iceland and has been active since 1789, a result of the magma movements associated with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (boundary between North American and Eurasian lithospheric plates) and the infiltration of water from the Langjökull glacier melting. In contact with the very hot rocks of the region, the water begins to boil, the pressure builds up causing the steam and hot water to shoot through the rock chambers, thrusting up a hot water column which can reach a height of 15-20 meters every 6 to 10 minutes. This regular hot water fountain is a secondary manifestation of volcanism.
