Our following article was about our trip to the supermarket “Jumbo” in Cascais. We were taken on a small tour around the back of the store to see how they were disposing the boxes and packaging from their food shipments. These are some of the things we discovered.
One thing that Jumbo had to offer was ways for their customers to eliminate and dispose off their litter and recyclable products. They had separate bins for cardboard and recyclables, a bin for battery disposal, and one for plastics. We thought that this was a great option and would not only help control litter around the supermarket but the streets as well.
They have many cardboard boxes and packaging used to transport the foods and products to the store. Because of this, there is a lot of waste that needs to be properly disposed off. For example, for the multiple cardboard boxes they use a large compressor that would press the boxes together, and then shipped off to recycling plant across the river to be properly taken care of.
In supermarkets there are obviously going to be plastic bags and other plastic products. They have one bag for hangers, and another smaller compressor in which they are pressed together into smaller bundles.
As well, they also dispose food that is slightly stale by sending it to the zoo for the animals to eat.
Another thing they do to assist with waste is the reusing of plastic crates for shipments brought in. Instead of using boxes that are used once and then get thrown away, they use the plastic crates that transport materials to the super markets and then get shipped back for more materials over and over again.
In conclusion we have learned a lot about the ways that “Jumbo” the supermarket, contributes to help Cascais stay green. With this new information, we now have many new ideas to take away with us to our own countries to inspire us and to use and implement in our local supermarkets as well.
