100 Years of Light

Built over 100 years ago, the hydraulic central plant was created to provide electricity to the paper factory. Due to the fact that there was excess energy the factory also provided, later, energy for the whole village of Góis. It produces about 180 kilowatts of electricity per day, which a 100 years ago was considered to be a large amount of energy but nowadays, because of the enhancement of technology it is now considered as a small amount of energy.

The mechanism to produce energy is an ancient one that uses the river as a source of energy and it is the same

mechanism used by watermills. The process consists on converting height energy into kinetic energy and, finally, into electricity. It all starts with a filter that is used to clean the water, after that, the water is sent to the turbines and then electricity is produced.

Although it is an ecological form of producing energy, while building the plant there are some environmental impacts such as noise pollution and also physical pollution. Apart from that it disturbs the ecosystems considering the fact that virgin soil was covered in cement and by the building of the hydraulic central plant.

Still standing, after 100 years, this hydraulic central plant still contributes and supports the process of providing electricity for this village.
