Descobrindo o EVOA | Discovering EVOA

O EVOA privilegia a biodiversidade.

The Tagus is an important milestone in Portugal because it was from him that the ships left for the findings, and where still many families by fishing activity, withdraw their support. The Tagus thus becomes a “sea” of opportunities.

Yet it is not only the human being who takes advantage of the river, it is also home to many animals, insects and plants. It is in Lezírias, sites along the Tagus many fertile due to the agglomeration of suspended materials, there is a great biodiversity.

To better understand why the Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve is a place of so much biodiversity, the students of the Environmental Health course, from the School of Health Technology of Lisbon (ESTeSL) went to visit the EVOA – Visitation space and Bird Watching. The idea of creating a space for observation and preservation of birds such as the EVOA, began in 2000 but only had approval to definitely start in 2009. This space allows the visitor to know and enjoy the unique existing assets between Lezírias and the Tagus.

The estuary hosts throughout the year, various species of birds. These may seek this place just to rest in their migration or even for nesting. To ensure continued activity of these habitats created for birds, it was necessary to plant indigenous species of trees like the heath or the jonquil.

Biodiversity is the variety of animal beings and vegetables that are found in different environments. It is responsible for ensuring the balance of species worldwide. But the greatest threat to biodiversity is human action, which is transforming the nature, spending up to all the resources of.

The increasingly erratic climate change is also a threat to biodiversity. For example, the large variation in temperature increases the difficulty of birds migrations. It is therefore important to have more spaces for them to inhabit and nest.

The EVOA privileges biodiversity. This is essential to life and provides the means for subsistence of man. It is also the basis for evolution and adaptation to changing environments, making it essential to the development of life on a planet that is constantly changing. In this sense this should be a topic of interest for all as it had a bad management of natural spaces, biodiversity loss could be a reality, which would ultimately have significant consequences for mankind.
